About Me

My photo
JoAnne Ruggeri
I am a proud native Brooklynite. I studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York (BFA, 1981), and on the graduate level at Bennington College in Vermont. I have worked in materials such as ceramic, wood, fabric, oils, acrylics, and photography. My work has been shown in various venues in New York City; Bennington, Vermont; Radford, Virginia; San Francisco, California; Chicago, Illinois. and internationally in Milan, Italy. In addition to my art practice, I am a long-time practitioner of Vedic meditation and yoga, a solo traveler, an avid iPhone photographer, and keen observer of both my inner and outer worlds.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Utilizing collage imagery, layers, texture, language, and color my work explores the dichotomy between the ‘real and the unreal’. By investigating themes such as memory, dreams, and fantasy, the work draws the viewer into the subtle realm of the subconscious. My goal is to create imagery that stimulates the mind’s eye, allowing the viewer to access internal narratives, either imaginary or recollected, from the level of mind which one usually accesses only in the dream state.
